Mission Security Commander

About the role

The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) seeks a Mission Security Commander to lead security planning and management for humanitarian convoy movements in the Gaza Security Area. The role supports safe delivery of UN programmes in a high‑risk environment, working closely with local security centres and the Israel Defense Forces.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct security planning and manage humanitarian convoy movements within Gaza.
• Remain in proximity of convoys, implementing mitigating measures to protect participants and assets.
• Maintain vigilance for threats and ensure effective security coverage.
• Coordinate with the Gaza Security Operations Centre (GSOC) and other security organisations.
• Liaise with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Civil Liaison Authority through GSOC during convoy movements.
• Perform advance work, route assessments and pre‑deployment briefings.
• Operate and ensure readiness of all security equipment.
• Assist in training convoy commanders and security professionals from other humanitarian organisations.

Required profile

• Ability to work continuously in close proximity to humanitarian convoys.
• Experience in security planning, risk assessment and convoy protection.
• Strong coordination skills with local security centres and military liaison authorities.
• Capability to conduct advance route assessments and briefings.
• Proficiency in operating security equipment and maintaining its readiness.
• Willingness to support training sessions for security personnel.
