Job description

About the role

The organization seeks a qualified Neonatologist to deliver advanced newborn care in a resource‑constrained humanitarian environment. You will manage premature, low‑birth‑weight, and critically ill neonates while strengthening neonatal practices across the facility.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide advanced clinical care for preterm and low‑birth‑weight infants, including emergency management of birth asphyxia, sepsis, and respiratory distress.
  • Oversee neonatal resuscitation and stabilization at birth, and support inpatient care in NICU or special‑care baby units.
  • Adapt neonatal protocols to limited equipment, ensure readiness for mass‑casualty surges, and contribute to perinatal mortality reviews.
  • Collaborate with obstetricians, pediatricians, midwives, nurses, pharmacy and supply teams to ensure integrated maternal‑newborn care.
  • Train staff on neonatal resuscitation (e.g., Helping Babies Breathe), mentor nurses in essential newborn care, and build capacity for kangaroo mother care.
  • Maintain accurate neonatal records, report outcomes, and participate in infection‑prevention and control initiatives.

Required profile

  • Medical degree (MD or equivalent) with a completed Pediatrics residency and Neonatology sub‑specialization.
  • Valid medical license and 3–5 years post‑residency clinical experience, preferably in emergency or critical care.
  • Experience working in low‑resource or humanitarian settings and ability to work rotational shifts, including nights and weekends.
  • Strong cultural sensitivity, teamwork, and decision‑making skills in high‑stress, insecure environments.

Required skills

  • Helping Babies Breathe (neonatal resuscitation) training.
  • Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) implementation.
  • Infection prevention and control in neonatal units.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet research tools.
